The Proper Pot for Each Tree

The following table indicates the main principles for the selection of the proper pot for a bonsai.

Tree in literati style	Not very deep, round or square, with drum decoration

The main objective in selecting a proper pot is to create the ideal harmony and equilibrium between the tree and its container.

The pot should be considered not only from the aesthetic, but even from the cultivation point of view. Refer to the table for a general guideline.

Tokoname Pots

Most high quality bonsai pots come from Japan and in particular from Tokoname, an area which was already famous in ancient times because of pottery manufacturing.
Japanese pots are still hand-manufactured. The method is of the whole die, so that the clay is pressed on both sides, inner and outer.
Metals and wood ash are used to give clay colour: cobalt for blue shades, copper for green and red shades (according to oven atmosphere, oxidizing or reducing), iron for the wide range of shades from the very light brown to the black. Iron allows obtaining also the precious green-blue shade, if the oven atmosphere is reducing.
